RE: Limiting Access to Exchange Online Based on IME or Single Device Rule

Hi Akash,

Firstly, I’m sorry that I’m not familiar with “IME/MAC based Access via Active Sync (IME based access)”. Maybe you can give me some detailed information about it.

Secondly, there is no official solution to achieve your goal exactly. However, I’d like to provide a workaround which may meet your request.

Let me provide the general instructions of it.

First, you need to change the ActiveSync access settings.

After that, when any user in your organization wants to set up his/her account in mobile device, they will receive an email saying “Your mobile device is temporarily blocked from synchronizing using Exchange ActiveSync until your administrator grants it access. You don't need to take any action. Content will automatically be downloaded as soon as access is granted by your administrator”.

At the same time, the administrator will receive an email saying “The Exchange ActiveSync service has quarantined the mobile device listed below. It won't be able to synchronize Exchange content until you take action”.

Then you can login to Exchange admin center to block or allow this device.

If the workaround is acceptable for you, here are the detailed steps:

  1. Login to Exchange admin center via http://outlook.office365.com/ecp/ .
  2. Click mobile->click edit under Exchange ActiveSync access settings.
  3. Check Quarantine – Let me decide to block or allow later.
  4. Click + to select administrators to receive email messages when a mobile device is quarantined->save.

Thanks,
Colin

Hi Fred4321,

Thanks for the update. However, we can’t change it you need to remove account and reset up POP email on an iPhone. To do this, please refer to the article: Set up email on Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch

Your patience and cooperation are highly appreciated.

Syncing Contacts with Android 4.2.2

I have a user that has 680 contacts in Outlook both in the client and the web application yet only 609 of those contacts sync to their phone. I have looked a few of the accounts that haven't sync'd and everything appears to check out. The contacts are not in folders.

The contacts were exported from an earlier version of Exchange in a .pst file and then imported into Office 365. I have tried running the sync manually and still they have not loaded to the phone.

The phone is on version 4.2.2 of Android. It only appears to be a few of the contacts the calendar is up to date.

Hi Cory,

Firstly, to check if the Exchange ActiveSync can work properly, please create a contact on his Android phone and see if this contact can be synchronized to Office 365 mailbox.

If it can be synced to both Outlook client and Outlook Web App (OWA), I would like to confirm whether all the contacts are in the same contact folder. When you mentioned "The contacts were exported from an earlier version of Exchange in a .pst file and then imported into Office 365", do you mean all the contacts were exported from an earlier version of Exchange in a .pst file and then imported into Office 365?

If possible, please also try to re-set up the Exchange email acount on this Android phone to see if it works:
Set up email on an Android phone or tablet

Please post back with the result and I will make further troubleshooting.

Thanks,
Chris Ni

Hi JimNevels,

We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I understand that you want to add the Office 365 account in your mobile device and Outlook client. Generally, if you need to manually look up for Exchange ActiveSync server name when you set up the Office 365 account in mobile device with ActiveSync, you can first try using outlook.office365.com as the server name. For more detailed information, please refer to the link below:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/office365-suite-help/set-up-and-use-office-365-on-your-phone-or-tablet-HA102818686.aspx?CTT=1

About the issue that you want to set up the Office 365 account in Outlook client, I recommend you try using Autodiscover to add this account. But please note, if you are using a custom domain, you need to add the correct CNAME record (autodiscover.outlook.com) before adding the account with Autodiscover. With this connection type, we just need to type your name, the email address and password. We don’t need to manually type the server name. You can refer to the link below for detailed information: http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/web-apps-help/connect-outlook-to-this-account-HA102823155.aspx?CTT=1

If you encounter some questions when you add the Office 365 account or you want to use manual configuration to add the account in Outlook client, please feel free to let me know. I’m happy to help you.

Thanks,
Anna Shi

Re: Shared Mailbox on Windows Phone 8

This is so weak... in addition... if you have windows 8 or 8.1 you cannot use your user name to access your own computer.  meaning that i have to have an account with "windows live" (which i think they call it a "Microsoft account" now )  that is different than my office 365 account which is a real problem when you are trying to automate a business process.  MAIL box for sharing is not functional for sharing.  the idea behind it is not just mail but contacts calenders etc...  if i make a change to a contact "bil" to "Bill" my whole team should see it and i should be able to do this from my desktop, or my laptop or tablet or phone.  "Single Signon"  was a feature i was excited about...  so far i need to sing on here and there and everywhere and try to trick it or buy another account and give everyone the password which is total CRAP.  This note is about a shared mailbox.... but much more for me at least.    I agree with all the complainer above.  and disagree strongly with the soft spoken..  "I totally understand your situation and sorry for the inconvenience brought to your business due to the feature unavailable."

Hi Akash,

As far as I know, the answer is no.

We can only create some simple rules to allow the access of some specific models of mobile device. You can find the Device Access Rules in Exchange admin center (EAC) ->mobile->Device Access Rules.

If you need further assistance, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks,
Colin

Block/allow Activesync by group

Hi, so I am deploying Office 365 E1 plan and I would like to block activesync for most users, but have a group which I can place people in where ActiveSync will be re-enabled. I would like to not have to run any commands on each user, simply place them in the appropriate group and their permissions become enabled.

I have created 2 groups:

ActiveSyncAllowed@mydomain.com

ActiveSyncDenied@mydomain.com

I have connected powershell to the service and run the following command:

Set-CASMailbox -identity ActiveSyncDenied@mydomain.com -ActiveSyncEnabled $False

However, I then get the following error message:

The operation couldn't be performed because object 'ActiveSyncDenied@mydomain.com' couldn't be found on 'BL2PR04A001D
C04.NAMPR04A001.prod.outlook.com'.
    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (:) [Set-CASMailbox], ManagementObjectNotFoundException

    8:42:28 PM] [FailureCategory=Cmdlet-ManagementObjectNotFoundException] BBBB3626,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.Rec
  ipientTasks.SetCASMailbox

Can anyone advise how I would need to run this command in order to make it succeed?

Hi Jamie,

This is Neo Zhu from Cloud Service Team. after reading the whole post, I understand that you have the problem to access your mailbox via iPhone (ios7.0). I also recheck the SR which you listed in the private message. I found we have escalated the ticket to the next level around 2 days ago.

I have send the mail to the support and continue monitor this case for one more day.

Hi Mike,

I reviewed your error, and the root cause for the error is the ActiveSyncDenied@mydomain.com is a Distribution Group . The ActiveSyncEnabled  is a mailbox parameter which cannot be used on Distribution Group.

For workaround, you could configure ActiveSync quarantine. For further information, you could refer to http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2010/11/15/3411539.aspx.

To approve you goal, it has to be use powershell script. We here are focus on cloud configuration issue. We are not professional on produce powershell script. To save your time, I strongly suggest you post the issue in Powershell support forum http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/scriptcenter/bb410849.aspx.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Kannan,

Before addressing the issue, would you mind my confirming the following information?

1. Are you able to sign in to other places with this problematic account kannans@xxx.com, such as the Office 365 portal, Outlook Web App and SharePoint sites?
2. Are there any differences between the two accounts you mentioned above, such as the licenses and permissions assigned to them?

In general, to sign in to the Office Mobile app, the accounts we use need to be allocated the Office 365 ProPlus license, which is used to activate the desktop and mobile version of Office 365 ProPlus. As you mentioned that another ID s.kanan@xxx.com can be used to sign in to the Office Mobile app, we can exclude the possibility of the client or server side issue. Given the situation, we suggest checking the license allocation of the problematic account in Office 365 admin portal first. Here’re the steps for your reference:

1. Sign in to Office 365 admin portal with the admin account.
2. Click users and groups, choose the user account, and click the pencil tag to edit.
3. Check whether the corresponding license “Office Professional Plus” has been allocated as the following screenshot shows:

If the license has already been allocated, we suggest you try removing the Office Professional Plus license, waiting for a few hours, and assigning the license to the user. Please keep other licenses when modifying the user, because other licenses are important for the users to use email service and Lync service etc.

If the issue persists even after trying the suggestion above, please don’t hesitate to get back to us.

Thanks,
Eddy Li

Hi,

You say that this case has only been escalated 2 days ago? I was told via email on the 3rd and 9th of December that this case had been escalated, that senior engineers were working on it and that they would get in contact with me, 16 days and multiple calls later where I've been told I will receive a call back in 24 hours (I never received any calls) and I am no closer to getting to the bottom of this problem than from when I logged this case however long ago it was now.

Now my question is when are you guys going to stop saying you are going to do something and actually do it?

Hi CiscoE80,

Based on the test from my side, if I add the Office 365 account in iPhone with ActiveSync and sync the account’s contacts in my iPhone, I can see all the contacts (the contacts that I have created for myself, but not the users in the Global Address List, also the contact groups cannot be synced to my iPhone) with this account in my iPhone. Moreover, all the detailed information can be seen in iPhone. But if I add the contacts in Offline Global Address List to my Office 365 account’s contacts, I also can see them in my iPhone with detailed information. Here are some screenshots for your reference:

1. At the beginning, I have three contacts and one contact group under My Contacts. The three contacts have been synced to my iPhone with detailed information.

2. And then I add one user in the Offline Global Address List to My Contacts.

3. And then, I can see “Ida” under My Contacts. And it also be synced to my iPhone.

Please note, I cannot search the users in the Global Address List who haven't added to My Contacts in my iPhone.

When you mentioned “When I do a search for a contact in the Global Address List from an ActiveSynced iPhone I am able to locacte the contact”, do you mean that you search one user that exists in Global Address List in your iPhone, and you see it in your iPhone? If yes, have you added it as your Office 365 account’s contacts?

Thanks,
Anna Shi
